A prophet like MOSES.

I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him.” - Deuteronomy 18:18

Since the time of Moses, Israel and all creation has been waiting for the ‘Prophet’ who will come. And then one night in Bethlehem a child is born, Jesus the Christ, the second Moses. Much of Christ’s life can be viewed as an asymmetrical mirroring of Moses.
Manna in the desert becomes the bread of life, water from the rock becomes living water, the bronze serpent which is lifted up becomes the Son himself lifted up for us and our salvation.

This mirroring is picked up in the high-renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli’s twin works of The Trials of Moses & The Temptations of Christ. These two frescos sit opposite each other in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. The Trials of Moses sometimes called the ‘youth of Moses’ depicts scenes from Moses early life as he flees Egypt and then returns to free the Hebrews from slavery.

The Temptations of Christ depicts the desert temptation of Jesus by Satan, whilst in the foreground a leper is restored, symbolising the redemptive nature of Jesus’ conquest over both sin & temptation.
